JUBILEE SQUARE:
Jubilee Square is the cobbled centre of town, with tall palm trees and the life size statue of Able Seaman Just Nuisance - the famous Great Dane who befriended the Royal Navy soldiers in WWII and became the only dog ever to hold rank in the Royal Navy.
Mineral World has a gemstone factory, with the interactive Scratch Patch and an unusual jewellery and gift shop.
SOUTHERN RIGHT WHALES IN SEASON
JULY - NOVEMBER:
Come and search for the friendly giants of the sea, the Southern Right whale. There are approximately 4000 of these magnificent animals in the southern Oceans and up to 90 of them come and stay for the winter in the shallow waters of this Fairest Cape.
Roman Rock Lighthouse is the one attraction that is not accessible from the main road, but easily spotted from all over town. It is South Africa´s third oldest lighthouse and the only one built on a rock!
CHACMA BABOON:
Chacma baboons can be seen in the surrounding area but to get up close and personal try a baboon walking experience from Glencairn. An extraordinary guided excursion with local Baboon Whisperer, Jenni Trethowen who has developed a special relationship with the local baboon troop which, together with the eight other troops in the area, are the only baboons in South Africa that enjoy protected status.
BOAT TRIPS:
Boat trips head off in all directions from the Waterfront.
Take your pick from a harbour cruise, to a trip to Cape Point by sea. Visit Seal Island (home to 74 000 Cape Fur Seals, 24 bird species and a hunting ground for Great White Sharks) or go on a whale watching tour for an up close and personal experience with the giants of the sea. Great White Shark viewing and cage diving also leaves from Simon´s Town Jetty as do the pelagic trips for birding fans. Still on the water - join a guided kayak trip from the jetty where you could kayak past the penguins or into one of the beautiful coves of the coastline.
FISHING:
Fishing in False Bay is an El Dorado for rock and boat anglers...
Fish such as yellowtail, snoek, Salmon, Snapper, bream and Reef Fish can be caught in the area. Scuba Diving is cool in the Cape, especially in winter. With loads of wreck and rock sites you will need to speak to one of our experts and get advice on gear, courses, boat and shore dives.
BEACHES:
Visit Glencairn for surfing and kite surfing, walk on Long Beach, play on Seaforth, swim with Penguins at Boulders, snorkel at Windmill or find a secluded cove to lie back and read a book from one of our stores. The beaches are safe for swimming and ideal for families with kids...so bring the bats and the balls, the bucket and spade, frisbee´s, hats, towels, boogie boards and loads of sunscreen to enjoy your beach experience. Sailing - ask at False Bay Yacht Club for regattas, races and other traditional sailing options or take a pleasure trip on a catamaran or go for Xtreme Hobie Cat Sailing as an alternative.
GOLFING:
Simon´s Town Country Club has a 9-hole course and also offers squash and bowls. Clovelly Golf course is an 18-hole course nearby.
Other activities include:
Hiking - walk up to Just Nuisance Grave and the waterfall above town or ask for a guide to explore various mountain routes.
Biking - a great way to explore town or further afield. Road bikes can be hired and there are plenty of mountain biking trails.
