Dining in Simon's Town

Simon´s Town is at the coast and it is not surprising that seafood tends to be the speciality of most restaurants. However visitors will be spoilt for choice as there are options from fast foods to delis and an array of international choices.

Sea Food Sea Food

• Bon Appétit is located in the same building and specializes in French cuisine courtesy of Michelin-trained Emmanuel from Brittany. Starters include escargots on a savarin of goat´s cheese accompanied by leeks with roasted garlic & chardonnay butter sauce. For mains: line fish on pea fricassée with chorizo & verjuice sauce vierge. Artful desserts include cappaccino mousse with frangelico crème anglaise. They have superb set menus and a fabulous wine list. This is a fine dining experience and a great choice for a special occasion.

• The Meeting Place is a rather unique establishment managed by Olivia Gain and Karia Steyn. More than just a restaurant and coffee shop, it embraces a well stocked deli shop that offers a tempting selection of goodies from freshly baked bread to olive oils and preserves, as well as a treasure trove of interior accessories. The ambience is incredibly relaxed and for many regular clients it is like a home from home, with comfortable couches centered around an old fashioned cast iron fireplace, and a magazine rack stacked with plenty of reading material to peruse whilst enjoying your favourite cake.

• Set on the white sands of Seaforth Beach in Simon's Town, with stunning views of mountains and sea, and penguins to entertain you, Seaforth Restaurant is a spectacular venue on the water's edge. Seaforth offers you the opportunity to delight in the fruits of the sea, or a range of platters fit for the most discerning palate.

• Bertha´s Restaurant is a waterside restaurant complete with views of False Bay across the yacht basin and overlooking the bustling harbour of Simon´s Town. Warm, relaxed interior and terrace and an invitation to linger longer over your meal. Lots of fresh seafood with an emphasis on presentation. Good option for the family. They do have an impressive wine list with auction wines.

• Flukes Restaurant at the Southern Right Hotel in Glencairn is a fast family favorite with a playarea for kids, kids menu and fabulous views, especially during whale season. A very relaxed set up with excellent daily and monthly specials and a comprehensive menu of seafood, great meat and vegetarian options. They also have a loungy bar called the Blowhole which is great for cocktails and on the property is a sports bar and nightclub with regular live music.

• Boulders Beach Restaurant overlooks the penguin colony at Boulders Beach and as they say a great spot for penguins watching people watch penguins. The outdoor terrace is enhanced by the fine cuisine by Australian chef Sean Kiely and the restaurant doubles as a beach café feel during the day with light meals and excellent fish dishes and transforms into a fine dining experience at night. The cozy interior has fascinating sculptures by artist Jacques Dhont and some intriguing dinner combinations with a fabulous dessert selection.

• Café Pescado is a few steps from the British Hotel and is a local gem with a Caribbean style set up and busy décor. Although the the restaurant has a European flavour the food is simple, honest and very satisfying. Pizzas and Seafood are the specialities, but great steaks with mix and match sauces. Live music is played regularly on a Tuesday and Saturday and locals will join in the sing a long and all guests will be caught up in the buzz.

•Black Marlin has cozy rooms in what was once a whaling station and is an excellent stop for a meal on the way to Cape Point. Orange chilli squid and kingklip skewers are recommended but some great steaks and traditional Cape dishes too. Set meals in the evenings can be great value. Wine connoiseurs should check out the reserve list on the wine menu.

• Just sushi - with the rise in popularity of Japanese cuisine, Simon´s Town is fortunate that Cathy and John Bedford have opened their doors in the centre of town. The emphasis at Just Sushi centers very much on enjoying a leisurely evening out without feeling pressurized to vacate your table for a second sitting. The compact interior has a small bar counter for those who wish to enjoy a drink whilst waiting for a table, and they offer Saki and Japanese beer when available. Just Sushi uses only top quality imported Scottish Salmon, whilst the tuna, Cape salmon, yellowtail and squid are sourced locally. The Sushi set platters are excellent value and there is a wide choice of Sashimi and Nigiri as well as lots of options for vegetarians. The Combo Specials are highly recommended and are ideal for both the novice and seasoned Sushi fundi to enjoy together.

• SOPHEA Gallery and Tibetan tea house - this Simon´s Town gem is set in a beautiful old ivy covered house in Seaforth with magnificent False Bay views. The menu offers imaginative and tasty vegetarian food, styled on original Tibetan recipes, and is praised by vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike. In winter a cosy fireplace and hearty bowls of Tibetan Thukpa soup take care of the cold. All meals and cakes are baked on the premises from the finest ingredients.

• La Vallee Deli, delicatessen & wine cellar, situated opposite Glencairn Beach, 5 mins from Simon´s Town boasts a range of over 200 of the Capes finest wines as well as a fantastic range of both local and imported deli products.
