The road from Muizenberg to St James is lined with grand stone houses that reflect the wealthy colonial past of the area. St James is a family beach with brightly coloured bathing houses & safe tidal pools. The beach is not all that big, but the size adds to the charm & there are some fun rockpools on either side to explore.
It is nice to stroll from there along the Main Street of Kalk Bay, with its long row of antique shops, art galleries, arts & crafts shops, bookshops & coffee shops & of course ice cream shops. Many artists live in Kalk Bay in the narrow lanes with their authentic Victorian houses above Main Road.
The beach at Kalk Bay is sandy with two tidal pools but it is the fishing harbour here that will enthrall kids & adults alike. The fishing boats come back & unload their catches in the afternoons & there is loads of action as the fish is immediately auctioned to dealers & private buyers. Some of the best hikes in the peninsula are up to the caves above the town.
